31 – Setting Goals
Setting Goals for 2017
It’s a new year! Forget the resolutions, set some practical goals to reach for this year. Resolutions are often broken:
“I’m going to the gym every day in 2017!”
Which is broken the first time you don’t make it. Be practical, take small steps, and move toward the big epic win.
Take the gym example above, here is one possible way to break it down into something you can do:
- For the next four weeks, I work out for 30 minutes twice a week. Find a video to watch on YouTube or use that fitness DVD in the back of the entertainment center. Now celebrate this small victory and move on to step two.
- For the next four weeks, I will work out for 45 minutes three times a week. Celebrate the small victory, move on to step three.
- Find a gym that is close and has a reasonable price. Work out three times a week for 60 minutes. Celebrate the small victory. Move onto step four.
- Repeat step three until the end of 2016.
- Celebrate the epic win.
Small, easy, manageable steps can lead to amazing things. I have my own goals this year: write my dissertation proposal, defend my proposal, research my dissertation topic, write my dissertation, defend my dissertation, graduate. Each step is important for the next, each step is manageable. But if I look from right now to the end I am terrified…My one-word goal for 2017: #Finish
Set Goals this year in all that you do – give them some serious thought and watch the amazing things that can happen to you and your students!
