Overview of chat topic
Are we really preparing Ss to be College and Career Ready?
Questions from the chat:
- 1 – What does it mean to produce college & career ready S’s?
A1: it means to have s's ready for life after high school. The Real World! #oklaed https://t.co/gYbv1grv6i
— Sam Madewell (@coachmadewell) July 3, 2017
A1) for me it's all about Ss being able to do their own research and be able to see the value and truth of the information they see #oklaed

- 2 – Do schools that have a focus on educating the whole kid produce S’s that are more C&C ready? How do we educate the whole kid?
#oklaed A2: Neuroscience shows Ss who have SEL learn better! We must stop standardization & competition & focus on collaboration instead. pic.twitter.com/RAFTp2lHtP
— Jena Ball (@JenaiaMorane) July 3, 2017
A2: By not teaching AT them. Be their guide and let them learn to educate themselves with our help and resources. #oklaed

- 3 – What role do electives or non-core classes play in preparing our S’s for what they will face after they graduate?
#oklaed A3) Electives allow students to explore wide range of opportunities, which expands horizon for future-very important! #oklaed
— Andrea Gorney (@AndreaGorney) July 3, 2017
#oklaed WE treat so called electives as less important that traditional academic subjects. Why?
— Jena Ball (@JenaiaMorane) July 3, 2017
- 4 – How can we do better in the early years to better prepare our S’s for post high school life?
A4. We have to instill in our Ss from K-12 to dream BIG & be limitless b/c sometimes the best ideas have humble beginnings. #oklaed pic.twitter.com/GnM9TcgyeS
— Marlena Gross-Taylor (@mgrosstaylor) July 3, 2017
A4: Fostering a growth mindset in our Ss. Too many of them are afraid to fail. Develop preservance in Ss #OklaEd https://t.co/brfaf1FqKa
— Jami (@epsjamiwest) July 3, 2017
- 5 – How can we help our right brain dominant S’s deal with a typically Left brain approach to the way we operate our schools?
A5 For God's sake, let them doodle & don't require eye contact. If you don't think they are learning, check first before discipline. #oklaed https://t.co/k1Ks0Uc0Ps

A5 Provide opportunities 4 them to use their skills 2 illustrate understanding; I've done it with my classes & got GREAT results! #oklaed pic.twitter.com/6yltT0EhZO
— Heather Johnston (@tchingelements) July 3, 2017
- 6 – What role does failure & adversity play in preparing C & C ready S’s & some ways to embrace failure as a learning opportunity?
A6 We must provide environment that is safe 4 failure. Because sooner or later, failure occurs. It's our job to help thru that too #Oklaed
— Julie Bloss (@BlossJulie) July 3, 2017
#Oklaed A6: The earlier Ss learn addressing meaningful situations likely involve failure that should yield better outcomes, the better. https://t.co/pBsJUqy7Lt
— John Bennett (@jcbjr) July 3, 2017
- 7 – What role does social/emotional maturity & preparedness play in developing the C&C ready student?
A7: for me this is equal to book learnin'. They have to know how to ask for help and make good, healthy decisions for themselves #oklaed https://t.co/tH2wV0Cmkv
— Shelby ⚡️ (@ShelbyJr3) July 3, 2017
#Oklaed Yes! Social-emotional skills=like muscles. Must be used 2 strengthen, mature & work properly. Kids are born kind, but need practice.

I wouldn't set up failures on purpose but do sometimes supply obstacles so they can learn about problem solving, cooperation, etc. #oklaed

A6 Everyone fails. We do our kids a disservice if we don't let them learn how to deal with that in a controlled, educ environment #OklaEd
