19 - Create A Chain

Create a chain – one that makes a huge impact on your school and community. How do you do that? I don’t know. Each person and school and community have unique situations. I shared a blog right here, you should go read it. If we want to make a difference, then we need to take that first step. Start the chain that leads to the most amazing experience for your students and school and community forever changed.

Everyone needs to become comfortable seeking to change in order to improve. There far too many people who honestly believe there is some source of preparation for a successful personal life and career – regardless of what that career is.

And that same thing was going on in my classes all too often: “Dr.B, tell us all we need to know about Thermodynamics to be a successful Mechanical Engineer.” Let me be clear, they occasionally came close to saying that but usually indicated that by the questions they asked.

My choice of Thermodynamics was intentional. The core knowledge of Thermodynamics hasn’t changed for a long time, really. But learning / memorizing that core knowledge is not (or should not) be the goal of any course – K-12 or college! The goal is to be able to use any course’s core knowledge to address meaningful situations; AND THOSE APPLICATIONS CHANGE ALL THE TIME!!!

In addition, some courses’ core knowledge changes rapidly as well. BOTTOM LINE: No teacher can successfully facilitate any course by giving the core knowledge to the students and asking them to give it back on tests!!! WE CAN’T TELL THEM ‘ALL THEY NEED TO KNOW.’

We have to get all teachers comfortable with change and then to get all learners comfortable with change so that all can work together to optimize Effective Learning!!!

That’s my suggestion as to what to do first – in response to your Drive piece, Scott! The longer this is delayed, the bigger the problem becomes. And you as well as all parents know for sure: YOUNG KIDS ARE COMFORTABLE WITH CHANGE, are curious, and are creative! School seems to drive this out of them…
